"The Broken Window", 10x16" oil on linen panel

"The Broken Window" is an oil study, created from a photograph I took of a friends barn near Traverse City, Michigan last summer. Recently, I started teaching on-line due to the corona virus "stay at home" order. With a focus on how to create a visual path through a painting I chose this double window motif so students could see how to emphasize one window over the other.

Notice how your eye immediately goes to the window on the right. The unexpected touch of blue and hard edges on objects  immediately draw your eye. Then, the small tree  and its branches pull your eyes away from the window to move left across the image The tree trunk, draws the eye down to the ground where the rocks and other debris pulls it to right and up again to the right window.

This visual path is the job of an artist to create in their works, as well as, points of interest along the way to entertain the viewer.

I hope you enjoyed this painting and the path I created for you to see it.
