CREATING REALISM WITH VALUE
1/2/2013 10:38:18 PMWishing you a very happy New Year filled with the joy of love and friendship.
May you enjoy all the beauty of our natural world.
Value is everything when expressing light in representational paintings. Sunlight demands that we utilize a full value range when depicting a subject while a cloudy day requires very little value variation. In the detail of “Hollyhocks” above (a studio painting in progress) the lightest lights and darkest darks placed in the general area of what is most important in the painting (certain flowers) gives the flowers the feeling that they are drenched in warm sunlight. The remainder of the painting is imbued with softer grayed tones of a middle value. This contrast between sharp focus/extreme values vs. soft focus/closer value range pops the flowers forward and relegates all else to the background. Thus, the painting enjoys a realistic 3-D effect. “Hollyhocks”, when completed, will be featured in its entirety in an upcoming newsletter.
